We will down in NOLA to celebrate life and Mardi Gras. All are welcomed to join us at the tailgate at Julia St. and St. Charles (northside)! Bring food, beer and a money to help pay for the spot. Family friendly. Catch all of the major NOLA parades! Look for moving truck!

2.11.12 BR Rugby vs Birmingham- BR will travel to Birmingham to take them on in the first cup match of the spring. Birmingham came over to our bracket- should be a great match! We are dedicating this Match to our fallen team mate- Nathan "Chuck Norris" Carse. We will be wearing black arm bands to remember him!

To promote rugby and sportsmanship in the Baton Rouge area in a community-friendly manner.

Our goal is to showcase the sport and family of rugby to new and experienced players, young and old.

2.11.12 BR Rugby lost a tough one to Birmingham in the frozen tundra of Alabama. A monment of silence was shared by the fans and both teams to honor Nathan "Chuck Norris" Carse. 30 degree temps, low numbers and injuries saw BR very flat against a tough Birmingham team. Good times were had at the after party where BR represented very well!

One year ago today, our friend and team mate gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Please take the time today to remember him and all the soldiers and their families that give so much for all of us and our freedom!

1.21.12 BR Rugby vs ULL-

we hosted the ULL rugby club at Highland Park on a beautiful "winter" day. A very fun and tough rugby match saw ULL winning (we should have never agreed to open subs!). Fun day of rugby and good time afterwards at the pitch- thanks to Mapp or cooking! A great club bonding session at French Quarter Daiquiris after after party!

1.14.12 BR Rugby in Austin-

The club traveled to Austin, TX to play our old rivals, the Austin Huns in a friendly. We traveled with 15 (see page photo) and played a tough match! We lost, but enjoyed a great match against a classy club! Thanks to the Huns for hosting us and to all that traveled to Austin! 6th street was a good time!!

12.10.11 The Baton Rouge Rugby Club combined with another local Santa pub crawl to create a huge number of Santa's in Downtown BR! We collected over 75 toys for the Boys and Girls Club of BR and had a great time at Happy's Irish pub, Lucy's, Roux House and Boudreaux and Thibodeauxs!! Thanks to all that participated!

11.13.11 Battleship Rugby Tournament- BR Rugby came out second in the Men's bracket, losing to our local rivals, New Orleans Green team. BR got to the final by beating two tough teams, Battleship and N. Atlanta to play in the fianl on Sunday.

9.27.11 Practice Begins

BR will begin 15s practice at Highland Road Park this Tuesday at 6:30pm. We will be practicing at the lower soft ball fields off Highland Road. Our new coach, JR Vendetto and past coach, Jim Brugh,will be there to get the team ready for another great year of rugby!

08.26.11 PCB Hurricane 7s

BR traveled to Panama City for a little fun, sun and rugby! BR (Team Green Jeans) came out second in the consolation bracket. Good times!

07.09.11 BR Redfish 7s Tournament

BR Old Boys entered a team (combined with NOLA Old Boys) and won the tournament!

Baton Rouge trveled to Atlanta to play Old White in the Pool play playoff. BR finished the season with a lost- but had a great time in Atlanta!

CLUB HISTORY

In the summer of 1977, a group of former LSU rugby players, and couple of imports from elsewhere in the US and beyond, banded together to form the Baton Rouge Rugby Football Club. Rugby had not been introduced in the South until 1962, and whatever rugby that was played was usually contested between university sides, some with more than a few surprisingly mature looking "students". However, by the 1970's rugby clubs were springing up in Southern cities away from the university campuses and there was competition at the men's club level from teams in Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and closer to home, New Orleans and Shreveport. The Baton Rouge club quickly rose to prominence and by 1979, was a regional power and featured at least one player who played for the US National Team, the Eagles.

Much of the founding group was still active for the 1985 season. In that year, Baton Rouge reached the pinnacle of Southern rugby and in the process claimed its first major championship as they defeated the Atlanta Renegades in the Southern US semi-final and Atlanta Old White RFC in the final and thereby earned the honor of representing the region at the Eastern Rugby Union Finals in Philadelphia.

By the late 1980's US rugby began to consolidate. Many of the clubs that formed in the 1970's merged into other clubs or folded entirely. Disparities in talent and resources between the big city clubs and everyone else began to become more evident on the field of play. Baton Rouge left the premier US division and moved into Division II. The move paid dividends right away as the club made the US Division II Final Four in Austin in 1994, losing a heartbreaker to the defending national champions, Santa Rosa (California) RFC.

In the late 1990's, Baton Rouge moved from the Deep South Union into the Texas Rugby Union to play against higher caliber competition on a more regular basis. The club still competes in the Texas Rugby Union today against Division I and Division II foes from Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Shreveport.

Baton Rouge's standard of play has been consistently good in the new millennium. In 2007, the Club claimed its first Texas Rugby Union Division II Championship and advanced to the Western US Championship semi-finals. Baton Rouge has made previous appearances in the Western US Championships after finishing as the Texas Rugby Union runner-up in 2003 and 2004. In 2009, Baton Rouge made it to the National Round of 16 Tournament.

JR Vendetto, a former USA Eagle 7s player and rugby icon, will be taking on the roll of head coach for BR. He is ably assisted by Jim Brugh, who was a founding member of the Club in 1977. Craig "Squirrelly" Gothreaux, head coach for the past 2 years, will be assisting with some of the coaching duties. Over the past thirty years, hundreds of players have come and gone, but the Baton Rouge Rugby Club is as strong now as it has been at any time in recent memory. Many former players come out to the matches and social functions and still actively support the Club. As we enter our fourth decade, we do so with a great sense of pride, confidence and optimism.

Fallen Brother

If you have not heard, one of our own rugby brothers Nathan "Chuck Norris" Carse was killed in action in Afghanistan Tuesday, February 8, 2011 by a roadside bomb. Originally from Ohio, he came to Baton Rouge to get his Master's Degree in Engineering at LSU. Nate was an alumni of LSU Rugby. With LSU, he played for two years (2004 and 2005). He also played with Baton Rouge Rugby for three years (2005 to 2008) as a loose head prop and occasional flanker. Nathan got his nickname at LSU for his amazing gift of beard growing and his uncanny resemblance to Chuck Norris. He was a tough rugger known for hard tackling and rucking, and he very rarely passed the ball like any good forward. Nathan was a great friend and teammate with a heart of gold. He will truly be missed. He is a true American hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The Nathan Carse Memorial Scholarship will be a yearly award to honor Nathan's sacrifice for our freedom.

Details are being worked out at this time. Nathan's family is currently working on the funeral arrangements. Details are forthcoming. Thank you for all your help honoring Nathan, a true American hero. He will always be our rugby brother.
